Glad to see you...

If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

AVATAR

Avatar is like Fern Gully but with aliens instead of fairies.

If you have seen this, then you know why this deserves a post here. Even though my above statement is true, this movie is.... well, good. I havent even been home from seeing it for more than 15 minutes so I'm still trying to decide how I really feel. The short of it is that it is a MUST SEE in 3D if for nothing more than that. But the story is good, the visuals are stunning, and it even includes freaky alien sex. But in all, it felt like I was watching the cut scenes of a video game all spliced together. It works, and it works well.  I was very hesitant to go watch it in the first place but because of its story and "video game feel", it is a definite buy when it comes out on BD and I'm very interested to get all of your feedback.

One addition: my wife liked it amd agreed that it felt as though she was watching a video game. What really made it feel that way for her was the "bad guy" who seemed to have not motive behind his madness. I'd like to expand on this more but I'm trying to avaoid any spoilers.

Note: when commenting, label accordingly if your going to give out anything that may spoil the story.

  2. I LOVED the movie. I will agree that it's very "Dances with Wolves" and "Fern Gully," but what movie is truly original anymore? Is that an excuse? I guess he gets a freebie because he came up with the movie idea 20 years ago and those others hadn't come out till years later.

Honestly I felt that the movie trailers looked more "videogamey" than the movie. I was amazed that not one single time did I ever feel pulled from the magic of the movie by saying, "Wow, that looked really bad for a second." Even my wife, who is crazy ruthless when it comes to movies like this, liked the movie and agreed that the whole time they looked like actual beings and not computer made.

Brjahu: I don't understand how you can say the bad guys had no motivation. Greed first of all and second is just ignorance and fear.

I don't think a single movie has ever transported me and convinced me of being in another world as well as Avatar. I actually left the theater and went to a grocery store and found myself hating people...I was just kind of disgusted with everyone I saw for a while. I wanted to be a Navi I guess. Oh well...

I can't wait to see again!

  3. I'm waiting to see it with the girlfriend since I leave for NH tomorrow... the previews looked pretty good and I can definitely ignore a story if a movie has good visuals...

  4. FINALLY saw it! Awesome, awesome movie... I started catching myself really feeling for the CGI characters and then realizing they were CGI and not really actors. You almost can't tell. Their body movements and facial expressions were awesome. District 9 And Avatar have both set a standard for CGI integration into movies without leaving a lot of tells... such as bad shading or texturing or odd colors or whatever...

Story was a little weak... but I walked out forgetting it was almost 3 hours. You get lost in it like LOTR.

However, James Cameron needs some help with his dialogue... Get some? Come to Papa? Ain't it a bitch... I mean, come on... it's all the cheesy lines from bad 80s action movies...
