Glad to see you...
If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

I have a nice work bonus sitting in the bank (earning the greedy, rude bastards at Chase interest) and I've been tempted to get a PS3. But between the 360 and my PC, I don't know if I can justify this.
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say that if my 360 dies a 2nd time, I will be cashing in my Best Buy plan for a 3rd one, only to turn around and sell it and buy a PS3. I've been lucky with mine but if I get the RROD again, I'm done with Microsoft. I bought an Alienware gaming PC that lasted me 4 1/2 years before I gave it to someone (and it still worked). I built my next gaming PC and it's almost 2 years old and still running great. I owned a PS2 for 5 years before the laser stopped reading discs.
Call me spoiled but I expect more from a console and even a PC. The fact that I can buy parts off the internet and build my own device for gaming and have it outlast a console built by Microsoft is amusing...
I read yesterday that MS declared they've sold over 39 million 360s. My first thought was how many of those HAD to be bought because the owners original Box didn't last. I think that's a very skewed number. My second 360 was a RROD fix and I had to actually purchase the next one.
ReplyDeleteI would like to loudly state that my original XBOX is 7 years old and works like it's new.
Yeah, I still have an original XBOX that is still running. Forget how old. Three or four years maybe... So I guess we can expect the XBOX 720 to run for about 3 months before breaking down...
ReplyDeleteMy PS3 ownership experience has been kinda strange. I've had mine for over 12 months now and I'm pretty sure that the only game I've ever played on it was Killzone 2, and I played it for less than 2 hours total. Even with this total lack of gaming, I'm still glad that I have it.
ReplyDeleteI will occasionally use the (clunky) web browser to watch online TV shows on my big screen. I use it for regular DVDs most of the time because it upconverts (and I don't always enjoy the accompanying airplane noise that my xb360hd-dvd player provides). I enjoy the interface of the PS3 and that fact that the menus don't freeze when I try to open a new window. I enjoy using it for BluRays. Even with Microsoft's many attempts to make it better to find things, the PlayStation store is so much easier to navigate than Marketplace, without having to go through some multi-tiered, 12th level of hell to find what you're looking for.
I hate the Playstaion controller. It feels so awkward in my hands and I have trouble getting around it. I don't feel like going into detail about that. I just hate it. Get me one of these:

I suppose if I were still playing Street Fighter games or Tony Hawk 3 or 4, I could tolerate a dual-shock controller, since their D-pad is superior, but I don't, so...
There are a handful of PS3 games that I want to play very much, but like many involved in Backseat Gamers, they go on my "to-be-played" list as well. And with a kid coming in April, it's an impossibility. I really want to play Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 1&2, Killzone 2, God of War games, Uncharted games. There's not enough time in my life, unless I decide to sleep 3 hours less every night to play games.
Anyway, my PS3 sits unused A LOT. But I'm glad it's there and I certainly never worry that it's not going to work the next time I turn it on. (I'm also very lucky, since I have two XB360s: one from August 2006, which I now take with me whenever I travel around, and another that I've had for about a year now. I use them both A LOT & have never had any problems with either one).
My original XBOX? 6 years old, but it now serves as the DVD player in our guest room. Works like a charm!
I really wish i had a computer to fully comment on this....
ReplyDeleteGreat article 3n3my!
I agree a lot with his comments on the feeling that came with the announcement of FFXIV. Although i had never previously owned a Sony system and my experience with previous FF games is very limeted, it just felt wrong. Kinda like sleeping with your best friends mother.... wait...
ANYWAY, my feelings are very similar to those of Carpatz. Although it is mostly used as a BD player, I still play it every so often and my experiences with it have been nothing short of phenomenal. My only complaints are the controller and the ingame voice quality but those are a topic for a different day.
My thumbs hurt so im done....
It was FFIII wasnt it?
ReplyDeleteI honestly prefer the Sony controller to anything else. I have a 360 controller for my PC when I'm playing games like Prototype or Sabotuer (If I'm playing MW2, definitely using a mouse and keyboard). The D-Pad is a big thing for me, mainly because I play a lot of Tekken. I really don't like how the 360 D-Pad is basically one large button... But when I think about it, probably the most comfortable controller in my hands throughout my whole gaming experience would probably be the Gamecube's. If it had a better D-Pad, legitimate right analog stick, and a second top button on the left side, it would be my ideal controller. Ironic that the Gamecube controller and the 360 controller have the same stick/D-Pad layout though.
ReplyDeleteLMAO! Carpatz airplane noise comment... yeah, so true...
ReplyDeleteThat's the 2nd time in the comments of this one post that I've been called CarPATZ. Oh well...
ReplyDelete"I love the sound my 360 makes in the morning. It's the sound of victory."
