Glad to see you...

If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Nintendo still downplays no HD support.

This article just has quotes of Nintendo of America president saying that they don't need it. I agree with what he's saying because the Wii still sells like hotcakes, but his denial also shows his cockiness.

Nintendo also use to say that they don't need online games and the old Nintendo president said that RPG players are all fat kids that need lives and play games in the dark. This only strengthens my resolve to hate Nintendo even more. Flippin chodes.

  1. The picture of the top half of that guy's head is frightening.

I like how his comment makes absolutely no sense. If you don't have HD, then you're missing out on HD. DUH.

  2. I guess my question is, "why is it so hard?"

Is there something going on with HD tech that it's so inaccessible? Why not do what the 360 did and create a combo cable that can output to both? I know you end up with some translation issues (fonts, clarity, subtitles, etc.) when you view HD content in standard, but is the average Wii user really going to care, much less, notice?

  3. I read about this in a topic about how a Wii emulator can perform better on a decent PC than an actual Wii:

"So why can't this be done on a real Wii?

it comes down to Nintendo making some fucking STUPID decisions with the design of the wii.

For those who don't know anything about video, every frame which is drawn to the screen must first be drawn to a buffer, which is essentially an image in memory. Now, images aren't space-less, they require memory to hold an image. The wii uses 32-bit color resolution per pixel, which means that every single pixel in an image takes up 32 bits of space in video memory.

now, a single screen at 480x320 resolution (the resolution of the wii would be 480x320x32, which comes up to roughly half a megabyte. Now, the Wii has a 2 megabyte frame buffer for video memory, so storing a single image is easy. Additionally, most games use what is called double buffering, where 2 frames are stored, and one is drawn to the screen while the other is drawn, in order to increase fluidity.

The problem comes from when you do the math for a 720p or 1080p image. A 720p image is normally rendered at something like 1280x720. So to calculate the space a single 720p image takes, you multiply 1280x720x32, which comes up to about 3.5 megabytes. A single 720p image is 1.5 megabytes bigger than the total video memory available to the Wii. And keep in mind that standard practice is to store 2 images in memory. THAT is why the Wii can't do HD. It's a fucking stupid design flaw. If more video memory was available, it could easily output a 720p image.

That also is the reason why the original Xbox could do HD, while the Wii could not. Unlike the Wii, the Xbox used a unified memory structure, where the video memory and the system memory were stored as one, and could be accessed and allocated as needed. So the xbox could say, "alright, for this game, lets have 7 mb available for video buffer" which would let them store 2 720p images."

And I found some images too.... it's really amazing how much better everything looks.

  4. I still think you are forgetting what the Wii is marketed too, not us, the hardcore gamers, but the casual players and most of them don't care. My girlfriend and her kids absolutely DO NOT care at all that there is no HD on the Wii.

  6. Mazen: Thanks for the info on the Wii computing power! An interesting and well informed read for sure. I can't believe how much better those screens look.
