So here we are, one week into Modern Warfare 2. As a retailer, it's been an incredibly exciting time. It may sound like I'm romanticizing the situation, but it's a real neat experience to be participating in one of the largest media launches in history. As a gamer, the experience has been nothing but rewarding - it's fast paced, fun, great looking, and most important in my opinion, familiar. MW2 is a true COD experience while being something completely new all at the same time. I don't mean to say that the controls aren't the same (they are), or the multiplayer is all different (it isn't), but the subtle tweaks to the things gamers "knew" in COD4, add a great deal of depth to a familiar experience.
I think my favorite of these "tweaks" is the killstreak bonuses, specifically in how they are earned. It never made any sense to me in COD4 that someone who was getting killstreaks (read, "playing well") was rewarded with tools that would continue to allow them to get more kills, which in turn, would continue to unlock bigger and better killstreak bonuses. MW2 has balanced out the equation a bit by not letting kills earned by bonuses count towards your personal streak. You may have called in a Pave Low that wiped the other team off the board, or controlled an AC130 and truly demonstrated what 'fire from the sky' means, but those ___ number of kills you earned from those bonuses, although contributing to your overall score, will not help you get to that 25 killstreak tactical nuke. It's a small change, but an excellent thought one. It still stays true to the COD4 formula by rewarding the well playing players with more points and kills, but it still makes them work for their bigger bonuses the old fashioned way. (camping!)
I'll refrain from talking about specifics in the campaign here. Although it's likely that most people have finished it already, I don't really want to risk it. I do applaud the amazing campaign. It breaks up it's own monotony by adding in stealth, action missions, and "tragedy moments", when they are needed, creating a nice flow and pacing. I don't think they made lighting strike twice though with those "tragedy moments". Remember in COD4, when you were playing as the dying soldier crawling out of a helicopter that was just victim to a nuclear bomb? That 'tragedy moment' hit me real close to home, and still gives me goosebumps when I think about the first time I played it. MW2 tried to add a lot more of these types of situations, and as a result, I got used to them very quickly. They impacted me less due to their frequency. I think they were well placed to tell their story, and weren't used without good reason, but the power that was in the first game's events was missing. No biggie though, just something I observed.
I look incredibly forward to playing this game to death. It's a great time to be a gamer, kids. MW2 is here, L4D2 is there for your coop kicks, and if you're feeling a little anti-social, pick up Assassin's Creed 2. I would put money on seeing a review from 3N3MY on that one later this year.
Glad to see you...
If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Couldn't agree more. Even though Bobbo Kotick is still a big jackass, I gotta say this game makes up for it. I'm already playing the SP for the 2nd time. There are some good twists, some unexpected and some were easy to guess. It leaned more towards the action movie feel rather than the more realistic feel of Modern Warfare. But that wasn't necessarily bad. I would have prefered it to be a little bit longer though. At least give me 8 to 10 hours on a SP campaign. I beat it one sitting last Friday night...
ReplyDeleteI did two of the co-op missions, solo, haha. I have yet to play them with somebody else. One was pretty fun where you snipe and use predator missiles to take out a bunch of troops.
The MP is amazing. Most of my clan buddies on the PC, all of which were expecting the game to suck, have all purchased it, even some who were more against it than me. They have balanced the perks, killstreaks, deathstreaks, and the amount of emblems, titles, and challenges you can complete and earn are staggering. I am constantly unlocking something without even knowing what I'm doing, haha.
So in part, thanks to I 3N3MY I and anyone else who changed my view on it. I might have missed an awesome game.
here's my 2 cents...
ReplyDeletesingle player - loved every second of it, think the story was a bit suspect mind. thought the set pieces were really well done and the pacing of the game excellent. as soon as i finished it i started it up all over again.
multiplayer - i'm totally addicted, cant get enough of it, i usually find with these games specifically COD just turn into a free for all, even tho u're playing in a "team" it was still very much everyman for himself. Now tho, it feels far more team orientated, especially with the new killstreaks and weapons like the shield. And i second the notion that it's so well balanced, there's nothing that's really cheap, except for noob tubes but i can live with those.
JuniperRed: See? The cool-aid wasn't too bad was it? Seriously though I'm pumped you enjoy the game and actually get to play with us (we need to do that again btw). Will you be getting it for the PC anytime soon?
ReplyDeleteMy 2 cents...
Basically and affirmation of all the wonderful things that have been said about it. I went from not going to get this game till after Christmas to it easily being one of the best shooters (multiplayer wise) I've ever played.
I already got it for PC. I'm like rank 41 or something. And I just got the Highlander title last night for making it a whole match without dying. I was doing some serious camping on Skidrow Domination and went 12/0, muhahahaha!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely more team oriented. Party members are in blue so you can follow them around. I love using the riot shield while some guy behinds me takes out whoever is shooting at me, haha. I've found a lot of people using noob tubes, maybe cuz they can't shoot at all... :P I really only use them for gun unlocks.
Now that I've finished the campaign I will chime in with some more thoughts. Considering I'm only slightly above average (at best) at FPS games, the fact that I was able to finish this game on veteran difficulty as quickly as I did is proof that it just ain't that hard (or maybe I'm just getting better...). Compared to my experiences thus far in CoD2 & MW1, at no point did I reach the level of frustration that I did in those games (and I'm not even done with them yet).
ReplyDeleteI still haven't really sunk my teeth into multiplayer yet. At least I reached a level to be able to create a class and just now got use of the SCAR (Lead Salad's favorite weapon to be killed by) so at least things are looking better than they were with the default classes. I've only played on 5 or 6 of the maps thus far. Hopefully I'll be able to familiarize myself with the maps and all game-types (I've never played anything other than team deathmatch in MW1 or 2).
Special Ops has still been the most rewarding for me so far, even though I haven't really done any of the hard ones yet. And I may have already said this, but Special Ops missions with a squad of 4-6 buddies would be amazing.
**ALERT** I just read the news that XBL gold will be free for everyone this entire weekend (20th-23rd), so get ready for even more annoying people than usual, and keep that MUTE button on...
I encountered a plyer last night that had obtained level 10 Prestige already on the PC... he has either played non-stop w/o sleeping since the minute the game was released... or he's haxors.
ReplyDeleteJR...chances are he's been on some of the hacked dedicated servers that have been created, offering a bazillion pts for each kill and auto noob tubing.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yeah, I figured some of that out. There were some dedicated servers in the other games where you could level up faster.
ReplyDeleteCall me old school but I don't get the point of instantly unlocking everything. It's satisfying getting all those titles and emblems and completed challenges...
