Glad to see you...

If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Beta Beta Beta

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have the privilege of taking part in a ton of Beta programs. This is not exclusive to video games as I have beta tested out things like Windows Longhorn (Vista), Office 10, Blackberry OS 4.5, Gmail, Google Wave... the list goes on. But, for the purpose of this post: What video game betas have any of you been a part of?

My list:
Uncharted 2
MAG (as of tonight)
Battlefield Bad Company
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Halo 3
Call of Duty 4
Call of Duty: World at War
Halo: Reach (next year)

I think I'm missing one but we'll go with this for now.

  1. finallllllly you're going to be in the MAG beta...i wasnt overly impressed with the hour or so i spent in it, mind i was playing solo, i'm sure like most games the experience with improve when online with someone you know.

    so my Beta list:

    Halo 3
    MAG
    Bad Company
    Bad Company 2
    Uncharted 2
    Littebigplanet
    COD4
    COD5
    Halo: Reach (next year)

Thing with these BETA's they're designed to be played and developed by taking feedback from the community, i for one dont give much feedback at all, i'm not a member of any of the official forums to voice my thoughts and tbh unless there's something i completely dislike in a game i'm not going to. there needs to be some form of incentive, Microsoft were offering free pts for ppl willing to fill in a questionnaire about the latest preview program for new 360 dashboard features, which i stupidly didnt get round to doing so but something like that would work.

  2. Thanks for the reminder. I have also been a part of 2 or 3 360 Dashboard beta tests. With games, simply playing gives feedback. There was an uncharted 2 video that best explained all of that. Think its on the game disc.

  3. yea, i understand just playing gives them a whole load of behind the scenes data, i remember the halo 3 beta they used it to monitor spawn points, placements of weapons etc then there's probably loads of technical crap like, optimising match making etc.

i love getting into beta's but at the same time it kinda spoils the anticipation of a new game if u've already played the beta to death, remember COD4, i put so many hours into the beta and when the game actually came out i wasnt all that bothered by it, i mean it was quality but missed that release day spark on the MP side anyways.

  4. Hmm.. gonna have to think on this.

    Tekken 4
    Tekken 5
    WoW: Burning Crusade
    Guild Wars
    AION
    Section 8
    Huxley
    MAG
    Uncharted 2

The Tekken ones were pretty interesting because it was more like an on-location test that was only available at specific arcades. Namco sent out a few test cabinets and one of those happened to be in the Chicagoland area for both games. Tekken 5 was also the first game to use the IC card system to store the player's records and customizations... so it was pretty neat.

  5. I've done only a handful. Mostly dashboard updates and what not for the 360. As far as games the 2 that really stick out in my mind are Bad Company and Halo 3. The only real change that was made from the Bad Company Beta to the final game was that they took away the ridiculous fall damage.

I think that when games are as far along as they are when we get them as "EXCLUSIVE BETAS" it's just as much a promotion event for the company as anything else. HALO REACH is the next one I'll be part of and oh how I couldn't care less about Halo's mess of multi.

  6. I did the Halo 3 multiplayer beta, since I bought it along with the full game of Crackdown!

  7. UGH! Mazen, I was in the Huxley beta for the PC... it could barely be called a beta. The first beta round it refused to work at all. The 2nd beta round, there was so much lag, I couldn't make it through the tutorial. I couldn't make the first jump due to the delay between my movements and what was occuring on screen.

At least being in the beta saved me $50 or so...

  8. Juniper: Wait wait wait...Huxley actually was released? I remember thinking that game was going to own the world WAAYYYYY back before the 360 released when it was "cross-platform." I thought it went the way of the dinosaur as I never heard much more of it after that.

  9. Yeah, the Huxley beta was horrific. The client would not stop crashing, and I have a pretty decent gaming PC. However, it's good to know that Huxley lives on as a better title called Borderlands.

  10. It wasn't released, to my knowledge. I was in the beta and it SUCKED!

I was sooo looking forward to that game. PvE, PvP, crafting gear, basically FPS blended with WoW... if the game is twice as good as the beta, it will still suck. More bugs than I've ever seen... :'(
