In honor of the announcement of a March 9th North American launch date for FFXIII and as a break from all this MW2 talk, I figured this would be a good time to see a Top 5 List of All-Time Favorite RPGs (if you want to get technical one the definition of an RPG, save that for another thread). Below is my list, sorry for all the Zelda games... I blame my mother.
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
4. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
5: The Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
Honorable Mention: Fallout 3 (360), Mass Effect (360), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GC)
Remember this is your personal Top 5 so feel free to share yours and argue why my list is wrong... bring the pain.
Since we're on the subject, here is the new FFXIII trailer:
Glad to see you...
If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Great list! Undecided on whether I'll get FFXIII but FFXII was the best one since FFVII, imo. Might come down to the fact that I won't have 100+ hrs to sink into it, haha.
ReplyDelete1. Final Fantasy VII (PSONE)
2. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSONE)
3. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
5. Secret of Mana (SNES)
Honorable Mentions: Fallout 3 (PC), Final Fantasy XII (PS2), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PC), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC)
Good idea brjahu! I'll def be picking up FFXIII in March as I'm sure you will be. I've been a little late on the scene for old PSOne RPGs, but I still think I have a respectable list.
ReplyDelete1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
3. Fallout 3
4. Borderlands
5. Ocarina of Time
1. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
ReplyDelete2. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
3. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
4. Final Fantasy (NES)
5. Final Fantasy VII (PC)
Obviously, I used to be big into the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy VII was the last one I played all the way through. I think I made it through one disc (of four) on VIII and IX but gave up on them. With Final Fantasy XIII coming to the 360, it may be a good opportunity for me to get back into the RPG genre. I've tried games like KOTOR and Jade Empire and just could not get into them. Because those games failed to hook me in, I've been resistant to all similar games since (Fable, Fallout, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, etc.). I'll have to think about FFXIII.
Hmmm. I've never considered the Zelda games to be RPGs. They feel more like adventure games to me.
I'm removing Ocarina of time from my list and putting in Mass Effect. Holy crap how could I forget one of my all time favorite games? I'm ashamed....naked and ashamed.
ReplyDeleteI would put in Jade Empire, but then Bioware would be dominating my list with 3 games so I'll just leave that one off.
1. Final Fantasy (NES)
ReplyDelete2. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
3. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
4. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
5. Secret of Mana (SNES)
My only honorable mention will go to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves for the NES. I'm too old for all those fancy new RPGs.
The ability to choose your characters in the original is what seals the deal and makes that my #1. This made for an almost new experience each time I played it (and is still the only one I ever played more than once). Also, although difficult, it was possible to go on a non-linear path and take down the fiends "out of order" which I always liked.
Along with LeadZilla (and to go against the wishes of the main post) I for some reason cannot justify calling Zelda games RPGs. (I would make a new thread about this, but I don't have the power ("MacFly! Those boards don't work on water!!"). If you classify Zelda as an RPG, then you have to classify Metroid games as RPGs, since it's the same idea (search the entire overworld map for items and powers that allow you to advance to some area previous blocked). The way I classify RPGs, the ONLY Zelda game that would qualify is Zelda II.
1.Final Fantasy VII
ReplyDelete2.Xenogears
3.Mass Effect
4.Final Fantasy VIII
5.Deus Ex
Not a massive RPG game fan but i've play a fair few...For the record, i dont personally class Zelda as a RPG either.
As the guy who never got into RPG's let me give this one a solid shot.
ReplyDelete1. Link to the Past (SNES)
2. Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX)
3. The World Ends with You (NDS)
4. Borderlands (360)
5. Marvel Ultimate Alliance/X-Men Legends (XBOX/360)
I clearly have a streak in the action vein. I too am a little apprehensive to classify the Zelda series as RPGs (At least the current ones) but the elements are there for the most part - Steady character leveling, classic drop down view, strong (and sometimes predictable) narrative, etc.
I should also mention, before I get railed by 3N3MY, a few of these are in progress or mostly watched. I really, really, really, really, am quite poor at RPGs, so watching a friend play through KOTOR was more than enough for me to appreciate it.
does Shenmue count as an RPG? i cant decide, it may have to taken one of my slots if so...
