Glad to see you...

Modern Warfare 2

Thoughts? Concerns?

After playing multi for a couple of hours I must say that I like it a lot (hated it at first b/c brjahu and I were at one point fighting not only the team, but a heli and a C130...not fun). It was a lot more fun after I was able to make my own class and not have to use the standard stuff they give you. Regular TD now feels more like Hardcore Mode from the first MW.

A HUGE problem with MP is that you can't party chat when playing team games....retarded. Friends and I have always purposefully used party chat to avoid the idiots in the LIVE community which makes me wonder if IW has ever even played a shooter on LIVE.

As far as SP goes I woke up early before work and played for a while and it's very good. Although I'm not sure having a level where you kill civilians in droves was a responsible idea. The only downside is that it's yet ANOTHER FPS game that uses the voice of Keith David....you know him. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202966/ It's totally annoying to have The Arbiter yelling commands at me when I'm not in outer space.

  1. Maybe IW did not include party chat in MP because they wanted teams to try to work together more as opposed to having 3 people in a party chat and 3 people in team chat (which we usually did). I don't know how I'll feel about that. It's been so long since I've been in a team chat being insulted by 13-year olds that I almost forgot that I ever had to put up with it.

Enough with the pessimism. The solution is that we just always have to have 6 of us online so that we don't get grouped with random people that we don't want on our team.

  2. Although I work with kids, not a big fan of playing video games online with them. Listening to high-pitched voices shrieking obscenities that they just learned that week is not my idea of a good time, especially when they're aimed at me. My PC clan is 21+.

Keep posting stuff about the game. I may consider buying the game used if my money goes to Gamestop instead of Activison. ;)

  3. We either put up with it or we mute the crap out of everyone. I'm fine with giving it all a whirl. Time to rock!

  4. Well it's 2 in the morning and I'm finally going to bed. I'm completely addicted. I like it a lot more than MW1 and I'm going to have to say that the maps have a LOT to do with it as well as tighter controls and a the abolishing of terrible perks. We're all in trouble.

  5. heres my thoughts thus far...i've finished the SP, loved every second of it, rivals uncharted 2 in terms of cinematic quality throughout. MP "addicted" to say the least, i think i played about 10hrs straigh last night, loving it, and doing surprisingly well to my own surprise, i never really did all that well in COD4. maps work very well with the new killstreaks, there's so much going on, at first i was a bit like, oh man where do i go, wat does this do, but now all that's out hte way the game plays so well, i've not even touched Spec Ops yet...

  7. JR: Sorry, but almost everyone of the terrible user ratings your hoping we see are PC users bitching about Bob Kotick and how he/Activision ruined a great game. Few of those guys have even played it. This is a site where actual reviewers review the game (not that they can't be biased or subject to the hype, but that link you posted is bogus). http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/modernwarfare2?tag=topslot;title;1

I just finished the game and that has to be one of the most badass final showdowns ever! Didn't enjoy the campaign quite as much as the first MW overall, but still a very good SP.

  8. Juniper: Better yet here's the most evident flaw in your link. Here's a link to the PC version of Metacritic where the reviewers gave it a 90 and the users gave it a 1.4.

I totally understand, appreciate and respect your frustration with what's happened to the game and you want it to suck b/c of it, but the bottom line is the game still owns. Sorry bro, but scratch up one more for Big Business.

  9. I don't want it to suck. I wanted it to be good. I've been a CoD fan since the first one and played all of them, except for 3 which was console only. I was waiting for it for a while and would have reconsidered my choice not to buy it if the feedback was good. Those users either bought it and actually hated it or they are not buying it at all, which supports my boycott.

I didn't get the metacritic link because the user scores were basically the same. It was running at about 5.5 on there, not much higher than gamespot. My point was it takes a LOT of people to run the score down that far.

CoD started on the PC and CoD2 still has a pretty heavy MP going on the PC. Me and some of my friends still play it once and a while. And coming from the PC stance, the game is completely ruined.

  10. I feel like if you go searching the internet for people who support your point, unsurprisingly, you'll find them.

I had a customer who insisted that this weird glitch he had in a game was a common issue. He had found a message board about his particular concern and you'll never guess who was posting - everyone who had the same problem.

I don't think that we should ignore a smaller opinion, but I don't think it's fair to not include all the successful stories related to the issue? Are *all* of the PC gamers upset at this? In all fairness, how much of the target audience for MW2 are core PC gamers? Are there PC gamers who are having a great time with the game?

  11. Juniper: Sorry I said I posted the link but then forgot to. This is a quote from the console version a "user" posted that pulled it down to a 5.5.

"Becuase of the lack of dedicated servers. the fact you have to have Steam installed. And the fact the RRP for PS3 and Xbox 360 is £54.99, and the fact Tesco are selling it for £25, undercutting local game shops. I give 3/10 just to put its rating down. FAIR? Prob not. BUT WHAT YA GONNA DO. Do not use caps. Hope I have not broke this rule I am just getting my point across better."

These guys are just trying to sabotage the ratings for a little vindication.

    http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/modernwarfare2

Excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject, but what's the deal with dedicated servers anyways (I'm actually asking not being a jerk)? I know there are more options and customization, but other than that whats the draw? Are there a lot of cheaters/glitchers on PC MP?

You still have to be a skillful player on consoles, but I'll admit that the community mostly sucks b/c it is made up of a lot of younger kids and people that generally don't care about the game or doing well.

If we agree to disagree thats obviously fine, but I just can't accept those ratings to be fair. You should just get it for the console and play with us!

  13. LMAO! I hope nobody is taking it wrong. I've just been assaulted by texts and FB messages and people asking me why I'm not getting it, as if I'm an alien. Honestly, it probably is a great experience on the consoles. Maybe PC gamers are just picky or expect more or something. I don't know, haha. I didn't score the game (since I didn't buy it and am not that much of a jackass) but there are enough people ticked off and willing to give it low scores like that. I didn't think there'd be that many.

There are a LOT of cheaters and hackers in MP for the PC. And by a lot, I mean you will encounter them quite frequently. One of the advantages of dedicated servers is that people can be kicked (by admin or vote-kicked) and/or banned. Obviously, there can be an abuse of power (some of those 12 year olds with high-pitched voices have gaming PCs, unfortunately). Basically, you pick where you want to play. Find a server with a low ping (another advantage) with some cool people who run it w/o lame rules and go have fun. The server is always there so whenever you play, you can usually jump onto the couple servers you've found that are nice.

Then there are mods, clan rules, hardcore modes, map rotations. I found a WaW server with no rifle grenades and no martyrdom and kept playing in there. You'll also get to know people in the servers you play in and recognize other players and what not.

I AM considering getting it for the console to just play with friends... we'll see. Once my roomate finds a job, I can buy another video game. :D

    ReplyDelete
  14. No doubt those rooms sound awesome. ESPECIALLY the no grenade tubes and martyrdom perks (you'll be happy to know that martyrdom and last stand are gone in MW2 unless you get on a losing streak then you get to use it until you get 1 kill then it's back to not using it). Banning would be really great as well b/c all we have is a "File Complaint" section and hope they get their hands slapped by M$.

As far as servers go its funny b/c LIVE has actually taken a step back from PC gaming roots itself. I joined after it had been up for 1 year on the original Xbox and back then you could search a specific type of game and it would pull up a ton of different rooms and rate their "ping" and all that stuff. I was just saying this a few days ago to Amateria and Lead Salad, but it wasn't until HALO 2 came around with this "party system" that that all went away. HALO 2 ruined it all.

You should just come over sometime soon and play splitscreen online with me to try it out. Good luck with the roommate thing.

  16. (1st-time post to this extraordinary site...)

So far I've enjoyed Special Ops the most, especially the intensity and camaraderie of two-player. I'll try to avoid doing any of them solo as I believe that will short-change the experience. The idea of having one player man the AC-130 and one on the ground is especially cool (though I've only been on the ground thus far). I did find myself wishing that we could go at it as a team of 4 or 5...maybe next game...

I can see Special Ops as a good opportunity for LOTS of great DLC that I would have no problem paying for.

As far as single player goes, so far so good. Lots of cool moments so far and I'm only on 'Exodus'. I am skipping out on easier game modes and going directly for Veteran, even if it means I go nuts trying to finish the game.

  17. When you drop the money we do on gaming rigs, you wanna be picky, haha. Just like 3N3MY said, all those options are really great and create a great experience, not a bad one. You have a problem with a server or the people on it, go find another one. It's easy.

But anyways, I'm gonna find the game used or something. Coupla places in Chicago have it used but I'm gonna look for one closer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow, all these comments about PC gamers and none of them came from me.... I'm so proud of all of you.

Also, I had my initial 1st 12hrs review written up but when I tried to post it, it came up with my wifes name (her google account was logged on). When I tried to change it, my post was lost, I got pissed, and never wrote again.

PS. for those of you that don't know, my laptop took a dump and no longer likes to turn on. I will have very limited posting ability for the time being.

    ReplyDelete
  19. JR, that is true about the cost of rigs and "earning" the right to be picky. I think at the end of the day it sort of strengthens the console gamers argument, but let's not split hairs.

What I'm surprised no one is all that picky about is the god awful combat in WoW. Could it looks any more like two strong burly men, kicking each other in the shins, running back and forth into each other, until one of them loses energy and falls down? Good lord, let's make the biggest cash cow Activision's got looks a little better...

    ReplyDelete
  20. If they eve allow you to hook up a mouse and keyboard to your 360, I would probably not own a gaming rig anymore.

And I will take back anything and everything I said about MW2. Not having played the PC version, it's a lot of fun. I stayed up another 45min playing SP after I told myself to go to bed. Other than how horrible I am at aiming, my complaints are minimal. The lulls get a little old between maps. But I didn't realize with the party system, everybody could jump into the party and wait for others to join. It's almost exactly like the L4D setup on the PC (which wasn't bad at all). My buddies and I would start a private lobby, get us all in there and select infected (of course) and then allow other people to join. We always kept our clan tags off so people had no idea we were all in the same clan, LOL! I still find dedicated servers more convenient, in the end, but with the party system, it's not half-bad.

The game itself was more balanced and though there is still lameness, it's seems minimized. I LOVE no martyrdom, no 3 frags, no constant artillery. And the fact that killstreak rewards don't count for kills for the next reward is awesome!

So, I eat my words.. and now I'm thinking that the PC version isn't all that bad.

And just no one thinks I'm a complete noob, go look at some of my xfire screenshots.

    http://www.xfire.com/profile/juniperred/

  21. Juniper: I'm really happy that you dropped your 60 bucks and really liked the game. It's also good to hear that with the party system it allows us to very cheaply imitate some PC setups. I totally agree with the more balanced gameplay b/c of the reasons you listed. Waiting for a new match can be a drag at times, but in the end like you said it's not too bad.

Yeah, nice screenshots. What's more surprising is that you've played over 122 days of games on those 5 games alone and I would still put you in the "functions normally within the world and with other people" category. So congrats on gaming like a mad man and still appearing to be a normal/cool person.

Since you like the 360 version of the game so much does this mean you're going to get the PC version and never play with us again?

    ReplyDelete
  22. LMAO!!!! At least that is over a 6 year period of time since I first got xfire. And I hope I still function as a normal person. Sometimes when you get in a dedi server, you have to wait for people to leave before you can all get on one side. That matchmaking eliminated that problem.

If I do purchase the PC version at a later date, I'll still play the 360 version, for sure. I didn't drop $60 on it just to check the game out, haha. It'd be nice to get better with the sticks too.
