Glad to see you...

If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Unreal Engine

The Unreal Engine is pure garbage.

... that is all

  1. Random, but I was sharing that exact sentiment with Lead Salad this morning. I just started playing Bulletstorm and I like it so far, but that engine needs to be buried.

It was ground breaking when Gears launched, but still having texture pop ins and metal and rubber that looks like it's been drooled on years later is bad.

It also doesn't help that most games have the "Gears Look" to them because of the engine.

Mirrors Edge is the one bright and shiney example of a game not looking like the color of mud with that engine.

May I ask what made you make this random statement?

  2. It wasn't really a random statement. Brjahu and I always joke that the Unreal Engine is crap........because of your constant and irrational bashing of it. A quick look on Wikipedia of the games that have used the Unreal Engine 3 reveals a pretty decent variety of games, many of which don't look like Gears of War at all. Sure, all the games developed by Epic (the Gears of War series, Shadow Complex, Unreal Tournament) all have that "Gears Look" but, sheesh. Let it go, man.

  3. Sorry if my frustrations with the engine annoy you, but it is in a LOT of games and Epic has made oodles of money with it and more power to them, but it doesn't change my opinion of the engine.

And you can usually spot that engine from just a couple screenshots.

I wish that you would tell me your frustrations in person or when we are actually talking about these things so it doesn't come out on the blog (and doubly find out I'm the butt of a joke), but then I guess that would involve us actually having a discussion, dialog or conversation.

Unreal Engine 3 can suck me dry!

  4. Well, I guess you're not allowed to play Mass Effect 3 then. Or BioShock Infinite, and especially not Borderlands, since they all use that crap engine!

  5. I'm not saying it makes a bad game (online mp is questionable with no dedicated servers) I'm just sick of looking at it.

  6. I don't even know what goes into a game engine. Like... I get the concept, but I don't comprehend what makes something change. I know all the marketing about them, does that count? Like Frostbite - that does destruction really well.

I don't see the debate. Have you ever been so sold on a game and then been like "oh no! I can't believe this thing runs of the Unreal Engine 3! Now I can't buy it..."

  7. It's never really been a debate because nobody counters what I say. I'm just, overall, not a huge fan of the engine.

The train sequence in Bulletstorm, that I just played last night, was probably one of the most impressive things I've seen that engine do so kudos for that because it looked sweet!

BUT I'm just sick of seeing and thinking, "They got Gears in my Army of Two, Blacksite, Wolverine, Mass Effect, Mirrors Edge, Batman, Singularity, Enslaved, Frontlines, Lost Odyssey, RS Vegas etc."

Not that it's a bad engine. It's just oversaturated the market and has, arguably, hurt the individuality of games on a visual level. Borderlands is an excellent example of going the wholly opposite way with the engine and I applaud Gearbox for that.

id announced that they won't ever license their id Tech 5 engine (unless internally to another Bethesda partner) that's running Rage. They specifically decided to not do that so their games look like their games and I respect that. It's arguably the best engine to date and they're keeping it to themselves.

The Modern Warfare engine is about to be in it's 5th game with MW3 and people are griping about it, but how many games has UE3 been in and how old is it?

  9. Engines don't bother me so much as what designers do with them... you can see from the variety of different looks produced with the Unreal Engine that Mirror's Edge, Borderlands, and Gears can all come from the same engine. I could care less what engine the game runs as long as the game is a great game, tbh. Borderlands was great so I played borderlands, even if Borderlands was running the MW engine, whatever that same old crap is, I'd still play it cuz it's Borderlands. The game matters.

Source is another great engine and so is Frostbite. And actually, if it wasn't FOR the Unreal engine, you wouldn't have a lot of those games that you have... I think the Unreal engine being used so much and by so many companies for so long as provided an easy foundation for the creation of so many great games.
