I hate sounding like a broken record on this, because it was already brought up in a previous post, but what is with the traded kills?
I've only had BFBC2 for 2 days now, and I bet I've already had more 1 for 1 moments than my entire ownership of MW2. I know that it should be seen as a semi-positive attribute, but what does it mean in terms of gameplay? 3N3MY definitely hit my initial instinct right on the money, it's definitely better than not getting anything for the death. Unlike MW2, there are no real bonuses for working up a killstreak, so a death means a lot less in this game than in others, but it's still a drag to die like that.
We've been playing conquest mode a great deal. To those unfamiliar, it's very similar to the Domination in the Call of Duty games. Unlike Domination, however, Conquest rewards teamwork and cooperation because the flags take a significantly longer time to capture. The capture "zone" is also significantly larger, which also rewards teamwork, because if someone from the other team is in the capture area with you as well, more people can look to clean it out, or overpower their presence, whichever is more relevant to the moment.
The 1 for 1 kills really make this a frustrating process. It might be comforting to at least know that this encounter isn't going to be affecting your K/D, but it also prevents the game from moving forward. Neither team is allowed to make progress, neither team is any closer to their goal, either defending or attacking.
Even as I'm writing this, I'm having trouble coming to a definite conclusion on whether or not this is something I appreciate or not. Is this intentional design, used to create a better sense of fairness, hoping to curb the "no way" sorts of moments we all have, or is this sloppy hit detection or health depletion, inadvertently creating 1 for 1 moments? Despite the fact that I appreciate what it means for the gameplay, I can't shake the feeling that this is accidental - last night I traded kills with my SMG and a combat knife... I suppose in real life that makes more sense then 2 people simultaneously shooting each other in the head, because after the one with the gun killed the other, the dead body could at least fall on the other with the drawn knife... no! See? It happened again?
Help? Anyone else have thoughts on these sorts of moments? It's not like this is breaking the game for me, but I can't figure out why it's their, much less, if I like it or not...
EDIT: Let me also remind everyone they should get this game. It's super fun to play as a group, and I can't think of anything better than having a group of 6-8, 2 different squads, all in the same party chat... awesome!
Glad to see you...
If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

I'm always pretty content with the 1 for 1 kills. I'm always like "Dangit, I died again." and then the points pop up cuz I killed the other guy and suddenly I'm pretty happy I at least took him out as I went down.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it was designed that way or is just a result of the gameplay itself but... not bothering me too much.
I too notice it happens a lot, BUT, if you are working as a squad and have a medic handy, you can pop right back up and keep going. This was happening with SevenGears and I a lot last night, but it actually worked to our advantage. Having two medics in the squad allowed us to trick the other squads into believing they had killed us off, only to realize we were right back AND there were more of us than they originally thought.
ReplyDeletePS. Squad Deathmatch is a TON of fun. That is, if you and your teamates work as a team. The 4v4v4v4 works wonderful and having only one tank evens the playing field a lot.
Amateria: I'd rather trade kills with a knifer than just get taken out altogether by one *cough* MW2 *cough*.
ReplyDeleteMedics....brjahu says something that's been on my mind (and Amateria's too). The LMG the medics get is too powerful, accurate and way too many bullets. We played for over 2 hours last night and it was non stop medic snipers. Literally they were perched in a high area racking up kills. Sure they weren't helping their team much and we still won the games, but it's annoying to be killed by a LMG from so far away over and over and over.
Using 2 medics is a good strategy, but seems kind of assholish at the same time and no offense brjahu (you did stat up your AUG to huge levels in MW2 as well btw), but I think most that have played with you could agree that you're good at games, but have been known to, at times, tread the line on playing more the AHole route which is what I predict will be the way most medic players will use this class for.
I'm not saying it's not a good strategy, but it does come off as cheap IMHO.
Seriously though I died more from medic snipers last night than actual snipers.
P.S. I'm already tired of the 2 characters models in this game. I think it's a perfect game to have a custom guy to build, but whatever.
One last thing. I wonder if the 1 for 1 is more purposeful than we realize. ALL other Battlefield games out have not had this problem so I find it very hard to believe it's a fluke, but that's just my opinion. I fall more in line with Juniper...at least I got something for my trouble.
ReplyDeleteMedic was the pwn class of Battlefield 2 and 2142 so it's no surprise it's a powerful class in this game. Rolling Medic (assault as it was called in 2142) just allowed you to steamroll the competition. Given the best guns, the ability to earn points for revives AND heals, this class dominated everything in those two games. Not that the other classes weren't fun but if you wanted the points, that was the way to go.
ReplyDeleteThe LMG is actually toned down from some of the other battlefield games. Of course, I haven't unlocked some of the major weapons. Give the medic a super powerful assault rifle PLUS rockets that can kill with 1 or 2 hits and you've got the class from 2142...
I will not deny that I tend to flock toward the powerful, accurate, big guns BUT my reasoning isnt cause of the BS, its because of the complete opposite. Its a good gun set that acually kills things when you shoot. With BC I have found that it is ONLY accurate if you tap the trigger, but even then it takes practice fighting the kickback. Despite these guns, the kit lacks any explosives or any true long distance shooting. There isnt any zoom so unless someone in your squad pinpoints an enemy, you cand do much damage outside of medium and close range. Its because of this that the teamwork kicks in. I chose the class, not because of the gun, but because I loved the reviving ability. The guns are just bonus, and one I will not deny I love. But, unless you build a squad with demolition, and sniping... you just cant compete. Think of it as completing the entire package.
ReplyDeleteWhat worked for 7 and I so well was the presence of an engineer to destroy the tank in addition to the medics. Also, out of the 2 nights ive played, the main person I seemed to run into was a whole squad of snipers with ONE medic. That medic didnt kill... he hid and constantly revived. I would easily say i get killed by a sniper 75% of the time. It must have just been the group you were playing against.
First nights play last night...quality stuff, was playing with 7 others at one point last night in party chat and we wiped the floor.
ReplyDeleteU're rite about the 1 for 1 kills those tend to happen a little too frequently but both sides are effected so at least it's fair in that sense.
LMG's are way overpowered IMO, which as a consequence, all the MW2 K/D ratio whores who've adopted the game are just running around with the LMG cos it'll get em kills which means they're straying from their responsibilities as a Medic.
Still looking forward to blasted a few more hours tonight should be a late one for me so will try jump on with you boys if anyone's about?
