Glad to see you...

If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

E3...highlights and thoughts thus far

Xbox Specific

Games

Gears 3 - 4 player co op looks excellent, looks like they've ramped up pretty much everything another notch, graphics, animations, weapon swapping, moves...cant wait.
- Beast mode - new take on horde mode where u play as the various locus, only seen some brief footage so far but from wat i've read it could prove to be a winner.

Halo: Reach - campaign footage shown looked good, cant really form too much of an opinion of it just yet considering wat we saw. MP we know will just be more of the halo action but news just came out that firefight mode with matchmaking will be included which is long overdue, sharable customised gametypes for that also, standard stuff these days i guess.

Nothing surprising or exclusives/new IP's were announced which was a bit disappointing.

Hardware

Kinetic - pretty interesting to see this kind of technology making it's way into our homes, i couldnt care less for the gaming revolations, tho i was kinda impressed by the use of kinetic for navigation and operation of the xbox....but i'm no way buying into it.

New xbox slim (or watever they're calling it) - like it, if it goes cheap enough i may even upgrade.

Sony

Games

Killzone 3 - looks a notch up from KZ2, loved the first so sure i'll be picking this one up regardless.

LBP2 - such a creative approach to a game, pretty much make any style of game u like and share it, having played some of the most creative levels in LBP i cant wait to see wat some ppl come up with.

Twisted Metal - finally a sequal to the sony classic, should prove to bring some light hearted entertainment to online gaming.

Hardware

3D - not sold on this yet at all...need to see it for myself before i judge.

Move - i'll pass thanks

Multiplatform

Dead Space 2 - looks fantastic, if u havent watched the footage on the web already go see, very impressed.

Medal of Honor - Single player sounds great, authentic story, realism etc. MP - footage looks like a cross between MW and BC which will hopefully produce something special, it's being developed by DICE which is certainly a good thing. Beta starts 17th(early adopters i believe, 21st for everyone else) worth checking out i'd say.

Portal 2 - only a brief glimps but liked wat i saw, outdoor enviroments improved graphics, looks forward to this one.

AC: Brotherhood - looks like a proper sequal to AC2 and set in Rome, seeing Ezio standing ontop of the Collesseum was pretty awesome. some footage of the MP has come online and looks very interesting, beta coming exclusive to PS3 sometime so will be checking that out.

Ghost Recon - loving wat i've seen so far, very tactical gameplay and looks graphically impressive as expected these days i guess. full 4 player co op campaign which is always a Pro.

Call of Duty - more of the same, no massive interest will wait and see.

Games that were missing.

Mirrors edge 2 - pitty no mention of this yet, love it to be announced.

Last gaurdian - guess there holding this one back till TGS

I'm sure i've missed a whole bunch of stuff so interested to hear your thoughts.

  1. I haven't really been following it, to be honest. The games that I'm interested, I usually just track through Gamespot. They had a preview of Lego Star Wars 3 which looks cool but that's about it. Blizzard game info will be revealed at Blizzcon and there isn't much info out on Max Payne 3.

  2. I was personally encouraged by Nintendo's presence this year. Although most of it are remakes/revisits/recreations of older IPs, they are IPs that I care about and find deep interest in. A Wii might be in my future somewhere for some of these titles, especially the new Zelda's art style. There may not be much diversity on the Wii, and all the stuff I'm looking forward to may be Mario based in some way, but I do enjoy it, that's for sure.

The 3DS looks solid as well. Less for the tech, and more for the title selection. As with the Wii, revisits from some old favorites, but it's nice seeing Nintendo acknowledge with their line-up that the old fans still matter, even if they haven't evolved much at all.

  3. I'm a little shocked to see you impressed with Kinect and hating on Move. Not that I'm a fan of either, but I do think one is definitely better. Kinect, while maybe representing an interesting (but pointless) experiment in technology, is going to be a worthless gaming "controller." I think that a guy on GamesRadar said it best when he said that Kinect is a representation that MS has lost it's mind. I have always said the same things about touch screen cell phones. I can navigate my menus on an old school phone much faster than you can with a touch screen.

From what I've read about Move it at least looks like it works really well and from what I've read can easily be played while sitting on a couch and works really well for shooters. All things that the Wii and Kinect can't do well or at all.

Didn't really see a lot of mindblowing games, but I am excited for Dead Space 2 more than any of them.

I think that all of the shows were really blah for me. Especially MS. They showed a handful of games we already knew were coming and some live action stuff and the rest was Kinect.

Nintendo is more of the same and while Amateria does admit that it's Nintendo rehashing stuff it's kind of annoying to see everyone flip out over the new art style. Looks like a 50/50 split of Wind Waker and The Twilight Princess. yay....

Don't know too much about the 3DS other than it has some big games and that the 3D only works really well at one angle and one distance making a portable system that much harder to use.

    Didn't hardly see anything PS3....

  4. Interesting bit of tech info about the 3DS, 3N3MY, the top screen with the 3D tech has a slider that allows a sort of adjustable depth of field for the viewing. Some games might work better with one player at one setting, and worse on another. Or maybe you might enjoy a 3D games without the function altogether. Who knows? I'm excited to see the first party stuff that's coming out, but also to see how other third party franchises take advantage... Phoenix Wright?

  5. While I do like the thought of Nintendo revisiting all of their old series, I just think it's a joke that they have to be on the Wii. All the best games (Mario Galaxy 1&2, NSMB, Twilight Princess, the new Zelda Skyward Sword, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country Returns) could just as easily have been on the Gamecube.

Also, it's kind of annoying how Nintendo releases a new DS every year (DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS...). I'll just stick with my DS Lite so I can play GBA games also, thanks.

Reach and Gears 3 both look solid. I hadn't even thought about Firefight for Reach, but that should be fun and add something for me to do after the campaign. 4-player coop in Gears should be awesome. I did notice in the demo they did for Gears that it had the same music from #2. I hope they've got something new for us in that department. After my experience with competitive multi in Gears 2 I probably won't even bother in 3. Finally, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be a launch date buy for me, unless it just gets absolutely crucified critically, which I'm really hoping it won't.

There were some arcade games that look to be pretty cool. Sonic 4 looked sweet. There's a new Contra game which I will probably be downloading (not called "Contra" at this point, but it's made by Konami and looks like Contra). Also, a new Castlevania game like the DS ones. I was hoping for it to be old-school, like 1 & 3 from NES, but it's more like the Metroidvania ones.
