Glad to see you...

Black Ops: Declassified

Black Ops has done pretty well for itself so far.  I don't think there's a person on this blogroll that doesn't own it.  This title provides us with a unique opportunity, however, because as a group we're all getting to know it better on different platforms.  I'm curious to what might be different about the game depending on the community of players, style of play, or open communications. I'm also wondering what set-ups are working out for you all best.  Customization has become a staple gameplay element in the last few COD games, and the game seems to thrive pretty well regardless of set-up one may use.  Black Ops balances this better than some of the preceding titles, in my opinion - the modern warfare games seemed to encourage different weapon set-ups as apposed to Black Ops that seems to make sure that everyone can have fun as they wish.

I'm currently fiding great success with the M14 and the FAL.  I do a fair amount of hardcore TDM, but the guns still pack a punch so they end up working out pretty well in core TDM as well. I've yet to venture into any of the objective playlists, but those all seem to be variations on a theme (read, "kill everyone") anyway.  Perk wise, I've been sticking to Ghost, Warlord, and Ninja, all "pro" as I've earned them.  Occasionally if I run into it more often, I'll use Hacker instead of Ninja, but I don't prefer it.  Equipment really doesn't become a huge part of my set-up, but the claymores seem to do nicely.

The reason I am curious at all about this is due to the success I've seen with this set-up.  It seems like everyone on the 360 is rolling out with some variant on this set-up.  You run into different styles of groups, but for the most part, Ghost seems used all the time.  I'm not surprised either - it seems like all of the killstreaks revolve around being seen by the enemy in some fashion and avoiding that should be priority one. It probably doesn't help that there isn't much of a better choice for the first slot of perks either.  Lightweight isn't bad, but without the runners having their dominance, lightweight seems to be a waste of a selection for me.

What's taking control of your platforms set-ups? Am I the new "runner", or "noob tuber", or is my set-up legit? Anyone else think the RC-XD should be a bonus for 4 or 5 kills, not 3?

  1. I've also got it on 360 and I don't think your set up is cheap at all. I have been playing alot of headquarters (by far the quickest way to level up) and haven't run into people using ghost much at all. I could def see why they would on tdm though. I find myself using using scavanger, sleight of hand and ninja most of the time. In place of ghost I use a strela anti air launcher so I don't even have to worry about spy planes (thx enemy lol), and for a primary i really like the ak47 and the aug.

Also if you really wanna have a fun time try one of the new wager matches. The gun game is incredibly fun and if you choose to wager alot of your cod points (which are easy to get) its extremly competative!

  2. Owner it on the 360

    Killstreaks

RC-XD should defo be a 4 kill Killstreak. I for one don't roll with them, I feel they're too much of a selfish killstreak, they never really guarantee enough kills to make a difference in TDM whereas the UAV is so powerful as a spotting tool which everyone can benefit from. They are however a bit of a double edged sword, I find myself overusing them and getting caught out by Ghost players. Spy plane or care package as my first choice of KS. I use Hardline with Pro which allows you to change the care package contents and usually something better than wat's in there already.

    Game modes

As mentioned in a previous post, i'm now a big fan of the gametypes, domination in particular. For me TDM is dead, it works in games like Halo and Unreal tournament as the gameplay for those games are so well suited. COD on the other hand, there's way to much me-me-me attitude and rewards for playing that way, it's just one giant free-for-all with a "team" score tacked on. Love Search and Destroy, just cant convince my regular crowd to play it much, they're way too impatient, and tbh they suck at it cos they treat it like TDM.

Silent1988 mentioned wager matches and i'm having alot of fun on those as a time filler at the end of the night or waiting to join a match. Gun game and Sticks and Stones are my favourite, i dont think i've ever gripped the controller so hard while playing those gametypes.

    Load outs

    Primary

Aug or Famas seem to my happy medium tho tbh i'm not 100% happy with either, waiting to unlock the Commando Assault rifle.

    Sencondary

Almost always the Stinger missile launcher.

    Lethal Grenade

    Standard Grenade

    Tactical Grenade

Smoke for objective gametypes, and that decoy thing. Concussion as and alternative.

    Equipment

C4, love the stuff, surprisingly useful, got some rather amusing kills i've been meaning to check out in the theatre. Claymores also pretty handy in objective gametypes.

    Perks (My usual)

    Tier 1
    Hardline
Gonna starting using Ghost tho see how i fair

    Tier 2
    Hardend

    Tier 3
    Hacker or Ninja

I dont really feel like there's an abusive loadout like the ones that plagued MW2. I dont seem to die much of the Noob Tube and RPG's which happened so frequently, the knifing is still a joke, it really should be balanced more to stop the lunging idiots, at least ppl cant abuse it as much without commando perk.

  3. I had no idea that hardline pro lets you change care package contents... That's gonna be my next goal. I have a few set-ups that create some diversity, but that's a new one. Awesome!

  4. I've only played b/w 3 and 4 hours of multi and I'm VERY happy to say I have not been hit by one noob tube. Just glorious.

  5. It took me a good several hours and until 3:45AM to find the perfect gun for the silencer. That gun, thanks to Silent, is the Galil.

I was full AUG or Famas, but the silencer totally nerfs those guns. Galil allows me to keep the stronger punch, but is still accurate.

The only gun I'm sick of seeing is the AK. It's all I seem to be going up against.

I'm not a fan of Ghost because it eats up the almighty Scavenger slot. With Scavenger and basically unlimited ammo I can use the 2nd weapon slot for the Strela 3 launcher and shoot the crap out of helis and spy planes. Also, shooting w/o a silencer will get you killed a hell of a lot more than being seen by spy planes IMHO.

My setup is and forever will be:

Galil with Yellow Dot and Silencer
    Strela 3

    Scavenger
    Warlord
    Second Chance Pro

    Semtex, Concussion, Claymore

Also, I don't know why the RC-XD gets hated on so much. It replaced that guided missile from MW2 that was almost always a kill. That was a 3 killstreak as well and nobody hated on that. I've blown more kills by not finding someone with the RC-XD than I ever did will all my time in MW2.

My complaint is that C4 is a little too abundant on the maps.

  6. I needed scavenge bad in MW2, cause I used sub-machineguns almost exclusively. Now that I'm using the semi-automatic assault rifles, I never really run out.

I think the thing that irks me about the RC-XD is that there isn't a way to avoid it with a load-out. Using Cold-Blooded in MW2, the only time I got killed by the predator missile was when I was too close to someone without cold-blooded on. The RC-XD sees everything on the ground, regardless of perks.

An idea my brother and a buddy had would be to have the "kill-earning" streaks start at 5 or above. Anything below 5 would be an asset to the team, but not result in an instant kill. I wouldn't mind...

  7. HOLY S***! Have u guys tried the high stakes wager matches? You have to put up 10,000 points and then it throws u in a random match type... talk about stressful!!! Gives a really good rush though and the pay off is super tempting

  8. I like the idea of "kill earning" there was a rumour in the build up to black ops coming out that something like that was going to be implemented. I think it's great and all being rewarded for being awesome, but the whole rich getting richer isnt exactly fair...I think it's fair to reward players for playing well but i'm not so sure it should be more kills you are rewarded with. Killing aids like the UAV and blackbird are much more of a balanced reward.

Dunno of those who played Medal of Honour MP, but they approached rewards in a different way by using what they called a Scorechain, it worked quite well. you got points for doing pretty much anything, chain enough points together without dying and you're rewarded with either an Offensive support, or Team Support option. Offensive being the typical, mortar strikes, air strikes etc and Defensive being, UAV's, radar jammers, flak jackets for the team. I really liked the system and can see it being adopted by other games.

  9. My PC gets delivered today so I can finally join in on these conversations. One great thing I've picked on from numerous sources is how everybody has a favorite kit and these all vary greatly. In MW2, it was stopping power for everything or you ran lightweight, marathon, and commando. That was it. Oh, and maybe that perk that boosted your explosive power so you could run around with noob tubes and claymores all day.

  10. I 3N3MY I: "Also, I don't know why the RC-XD gets hated on so much. It replaced that guided missile from MW2 that was almost always a kill. That was a 3 killstreak as well and nobody hated on that."

I hate to be a stickler, but I think the "guided missile" to which you refer was the predator missile, which was in fact a reward for 5 kills, not 3. If that had been a 3 killstreak reward, I guarantee you it would have been hated on, and predator missiles would have been constant, like UAVs were (and like RC-XDs are).

  11. Finally got my PC! WOOT! Game is lagging a bit on the PC and that's after they patched it once or twice, haha.

In the hour I played, I've been killed by one RC but I also managed to kill one before it got to me too...

  12. Well, I've put about 10+ hours into the multiplayer as I recover from my sinus surgery (thus, all the free time) and I am really digging it. It seems fairly balance and I have yet to get irritated at the game, even when I'm not doing that well. RC cars are balanced by being loud and a little hard to control, chopper gunner is slow when aiming when the mouse, valkyrie rockets are hard to steer, etc., etc.

I love the perk balancing. A LOT of people run all kinds of different kits and they all have great advantages without feeling OP. I have my CTF kit, my assault rifle kit, and a sneaky kit for hardcore servers.

Claymore bothering you? Get hacker. Spy planes annoying? Go ghost. Frags getting you down? Put on a flak jacket. Haha... There's always a challenge you are completing, always something unlocking, always the next thing to buy with your COD points. And the COD points are easy to earn so if you really need something, you can go play a round or two and have enough points to buy whatever it is.

Anyways, this is what MW2 should have been, imo. Treyarch used to be the underdog for a lot of people but I think they've destroyed Infinity Ward this time around.

  13. Juniper, I know there are always counters to the items people can use, but isn't that missing the point? It becomes more about if my particular setup works within my immediate lobby, not the game as a whole. Some nights, my loadouts are just workin' it, but others, I get trampled through and through.

With so much customization, every encounter becomes this exaggerated game of rock-paper-scissors... There's no way for me to know what setup someone else is using until it's too late, and sometimes I don't even have a counter class to get it taken care of. The designers have just made the game balancing your responsibility!

That being said, I do appreciate the tweaks they've made. With a few killstreak/map/gametype conflicts I think that go on (anyone ever get stuck in a domination game on nuketown with an enemy chopper gunner?) it is really well balanced, and better than MW2. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the more contemporary weapons though. (Famas is my new favorite, btw)
