Glad to see you...

Xbox 720

Not sure if anyone had seen the volley of rumors and speculation that EA has a development kit for the next Xbox, but this is a great read giving good reason to think that another Xbox could be much sooner than we all thought.

If the article is correct and the next Xbox drops next year close to the new Nintendo would you buy one?

All Xbox hatred aside I don't think I'll be so quick to early adopt for the next generation, whenever that may be. I was one of the lucky ones that had my launch day 360 last a considerably long time, but don't hold out hope for a reliable product from MS on day one.

The Nintendo console will more than likely be super reliable because that is Nintendo's strength and the tech that they'll be using is already a proven structure for gaming with PS3 and 360.

I wonder what's going on over at Sony, other than trying to fix PSN.

  1. I never pick up the new tech whenever it comes out, whether it's phones, ipods, consoles, whatever... None of it is reliable right off the bat, especially not MS products. 7 was decent from the get go but that's after they learned from the failure of Vista.

  2. I generally don't either. Usually, this is based on funds though, not wisdom or desire.

I thought Nintendo was making an odd power-grab by trying to step back into the core market with whatever thing they're working on. If Microsoft follows suit, even if the 360 still had some life in it, it could potentially leave Sony in the dark. I don't think it would effect the PS3's success overall, but an updated system could (in theory, at the very least) meet the standards Sony has set for next-gen quality.

Sony's motive in the past has always had a sort of "future" mentality... from the PS2/PS9 ads, to the investment in media that hasn't quite gone mainstream yet (CD, DVD, BDD, etc.). Updating before a new media format is ready would be out of their regular curve, and could mess up a pretty successful business model. Necessary upgrades for MS and Nintendo, potential backlash for Sony?

  3. Amateria: If this all actually went down I was wondering where it would leave Sony as well.

Out of any of the consoles I think we'd all agree that the PS3 still has the most potential to "keep going", but Amateria raises a great point.

Could Sony get left behind? MS and Nintendo are moving out of necessity and that could very well force Sony's hand.

    Time will tell.

  4. Honestly as long as sony recovers from the psn incedent, they will be fine. I also think nintendos new system will be successful as well because nintendos games are fun. Let me elaborate on what i mean by "fun." Lately I feel like I've fallen into a videogame slump of not finishing good games... I've been trying to figure out why that is and just last week while playing the new donkey kong with my wife, it hit me... I've been playing all these great games (god of war series, black ops, halo reach... etc) and while yes they have great graphics and storylines, they really aren't any fun to me... why is it I find myself constantly going back to my old nintendo systems lately? I feel like alot of the games that are coming out these days are focused so much on story telling and graphics that they completely miss the point that games are suppossed to be fun.

donkey kong country returns is one of the first games I've played in awhile that I can honestyl say was "fun". Also mario galaxy was a blast to (still haven't finished it yet but enjoying it lol). So I think even though the new xbox will be cool, it will not bury sony or nintendo, if anything it will play catchup to the ps3. Nintendo will always sell well as long as they continue to release the multiple game series that made them what they are today and sony will continue to also as long as they keep up technologically. Do any of you guys feel like games just aren't as fun as they could be?

Sorry for getting off subject but I can't post my own articles on here and was just wondering if any of you guys are experiencing this.

  5. ^^I've been in the same slump as Silent. I'm waiting some big releases this fall but games haven't been as fun lately. They really have become extremely focused on story whereas I still love games with little to no story, such as Civ V and the multiplayer of BC2. Brink is fun but I don't know how long it'll hold my attention. I recently reactivitated my World of Warcraft account and started playing it again... after I swore I never would buuuut... been a slow time for gaming.

I've never really been a "fanboy" of one console over the other so frankly, I'll buy whatever is cheapest. My PC is my main platform and a console is secondary. If MS creates an aewsome console, fixes the bugs it will inevitably have, and the price is lower than Sony's PS4, I'll stick with MS.

  6. I don't think I would buy any next-gen stuff right away. As long as quality stuff continues to be produced for the 360 and PS3 I'll be happy.

Honestly, we're at the point now where games aren't going to look that much better. The jump from the last generation into this current one was HUGE because we crossed the "HD" line. Now we're just going to be going from HD to "slightly better HD." Due to this, I think the next consoles might go through a big "feature war." What extra "features" will one console have over another? Will people even care or should we just worry about the quality of the games?

For me personally, it's all about the games. All the extra stuff on the consoles is great, but I am first and foremost a gamer, and I'll be all about whichever console or consoles have the best games that I want to play.

If I was a game company, I would be terrified to release my console first in a new generation.
