Glad to see you...

Brink First Impressions

Got to play the game for a couple hours yesterday, maybe about 4 or so. So far, I've pretty much enjoyed. Played a lot of the single player and the bots are very comparable to the bots in Left 4 Dead. They are smart buuuuut not that smart. Played a couple rounds of the multiplayer too and it was a lot of fun. One round the security forces had to escort this guy by using medics to refill his health and keep him walking. Our team, the rebels or whatever they are called, have to shoot the escort guy to make him stop and kneel until a security guy heals him.

The security team escorted him all the way to the very end of the level, just mere feet away from the boat they had to get him on and we stopped him there and held the position. As an engineer, I set a turret up at the main entrance and then set up a mine right at the feet of the escort guy. Needless to say, we crushed the other team partially due to their failure to use a door up on the second floor that led out to the dock area. They kept trying to rush the main door and me, my teammates, and my turret mowed them all down.

Anyways, my first impressions are pretty good. Good graphics and art style, solid gun sounds, great teamwork, and the SMART system is definitely a nice touch. Seems like a solid shooter that relies heavily on teamwork. Not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from but it's probably from people who are hardcore Halo/CoD fans. I'll post up a full review once I've played it some more.

  1. In reference to your Halo/CoD comment: 3N3MY and I were making light of the fact that Brink is getting crappy reviews because it is not Call of Duty. In general, I think that those two series are "technically" at the top of the heap: each entry has a very clean presentation, smooth controls, polished multiplayer, etc. so that is why everything ultimately gets compared to them.

But nevermind the fact that both of those are aging franchises that have saturated the market far too much. Since 2005, we have had a new Call of Duty game EVERY fall, and they are each essentially the same. Halo does a bit better, with a release every 3 years (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010) that was slightly broken up by ODST in 2009.

I guess all I am saying is that....it is not really fair that all shooters have to pass the "Call of Duty test." Hopefully, consumers have wised up a bit and will not buy $1 billion worth of the inevitable Modern Warfare 3.

  2. I totally agree with both of you. I have about 3 or more hours into brink so far and i'm loving it so far. Its refreshing because its a great shooter that manages to not feel like a halo or cod. The game itself is alot of fun and the learning curve is pretty easy. I love the fact that if you don't work as a team your opponnents will stomp u into the ground. I've only been able to play it on single player so far due to psn still being down.

I personally love the colorful environments and in depth character customization also. Brink has 3 main modes of play which include: campaign, freeplay (a customizable version of campaign), and challanges (where all the guns and attachments are unlocked). The story is pretty bland and not very in depth so far (playing as security and on final mission) but it gives u just enough incentive to play through to the end. The challange mode might as well been called a tutorial because that's basically what it is. I went through all of the challlanges in around 45 mins and unlocked all the guns and attachments already which is nice because I don't have to play online for 16 plus hours to unlock the gun u want. The outfits and abilities are unlocked through gaining xp.

The smart movement system could have used a little more fine tuning but overall was implemented extremely well. I love using the light body type to dodge bullets by entering a quick sprint and vaulting off a side wall. The sliding mechanism works well also and if you time it perfectly you can do a lot of damage with it. It will be interesting to see how the team based gameplay will affect the psn community. I will hopefully write a full review of the game after I have finished both sides of the campaign and gotten some good online time in but so far brink is awesome!

  3. I agree that "technically" CoD and HALO, for consoles, are at the top of their game (get it?).

Bad Company 2 is still the greatest MP shooter on earth, but many times you'll end up in a room with only 3 guys. You'll then be wishing for a little more deliberateness in matching up a game.

A phenomenal shooter that I put a lot of time into online was Rainbow Six: Vegas. It was like Gears mixed with CoD and it played really really well. The matches flowed from one to the next and when the community was active it was the best shooter on the system. I still long for that one from time to time.

  4. Maybe it was just the PC version but when Blops came out, it was a horrible broken mess that required some patches to even run properly. BC2, as suberb a game as it was, had a pretty buggy start too... and people are ripping on Brink for some bugs. WAY smoother launch than either CoD or Battlefield, at least on the PC.

I'm all about people having their own gaming opinions but some of these reviews are pissing me off!
