Wii U may possibly only allow 1 controller per system and they can't play DVDs or Blu-Rays.
Are they trying to lose it for themselves? I know that splitscreen isn't what it used to be, but the idea of a one controller system boggles my mind.
I can understand no Blu-Ray support, but not even DVD? The PS3 and 360 have been marketed, successfully so, as multimedia machines. They've tried to build an all-in-one machine of entertainment and it's worked really well because my PS3 does everything I want and need it to.
Does this make sense to anyone else? Does anyone even use stand alone DVD players anymore?
Glad to see you...
If the gaming industry is an automobile, and the game designers are the drivers, then that makes us, the players, backseat drivers, and we'll be damned if we're gonna let the industry keep on heading the way it's going (good or bad) without letting them know what we think. So buckle up, feel free to complain about there being no air in the back, and bring your most critical and analytical mind to the open air discussion of the current age, Backseat Gamers!

Sorry for the late response on this.
ReplyDeleteThe only insight I have was from when I once talked to a Nintendo rep. Something he said that Nintendo tries to avoid is becoming to wide focussed. While multi-media functionality seems to be a given in today's technological age, Nintendo has never integrated by choice, and it seems to have worked. Whether or not they'll be left in the dust this time around has yet to be seen, but they haven't regretted it so far...
I think it's interesting to note that Nintendo has generally been behind in the technological curve, but they always seem to come out on top. Now it's easy to say that big titles like mario and zelda move units, but what was the excuse that Sega made up in the 90's? It wasn't until the second version of the gameboy advance came around that we saw a backlight on a Nintendo handheld, but anyone who's shown up to the party with Nintendo has left empty handed...
Nintendo can also cut serious costs to their systems as well by no integrating the DVD/BD players. Asking "does anyone have standalone players", could also be phrased, "does anyone need another dvd player", since so many already exist in other products. I'd like to think the consumer group the Wii U is targeted at already has their DVD/BD needs met.
